From Grammarly: How To Write Good, by Frank L. Visco!

Caveat emptor. Carpe diem. O si villi, si ergo, fortibus is in ero. Et tu, brute.

My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:

1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They're old hat.)
4. Employ the vernacular.
5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
8. Contractions aren't necessary.
9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
10. One should never generalize.
11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
12. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
13. Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14. Profanity sucks.
15. Be more or less specific.
16. Understatement is always best.
17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be avoided.
21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
22. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
23. Who needs rhetorical questions?

Before COFFEE TIME, I called Chrystal to see what time we should meet tonight; 7:30 sounds good to me! I went out early at 5:30 to see if I could get that dragon hoodie at H and M after figuring out all the sidewalk and bus stop closures. They were all in a Medium size, but I figured that I'd make it work somehow. I didn't even care that I couldn't exchange it or get a refund since it was on clearance! $15 off - from $39.99 to $24.99! Then I went to the nearby London Drugs, then to the Broadway / Cambie London Drugs. Figured I'd spend my $75 tax refund while I was out and could do stuff, and I did! Now I have to wait for the April credit to go through, ha ha ha...

As I was reading an ARCHIE book, Chrystal came up to me - she was on time today! I told her that I had a birthday card for her, and not to worry about the rest of the stuff in my bulky reusable bag - that was all for me! We went to Pho Extreme Xe Lua to catch up: her parents going to Dubai pretty soon, Ethan and Mike being sick with the flu, my new Reddit friends, the whole Woob and Twitter screenshots saga, Benjamin being about the same age as Beckett, Beckett screaming as loud as the 80s music inside Como Taperia, and her knowing that I liked spicy stuff. After dinner, I went home instead of joining Brian, Paulo, and others at the American. I did stop by Shoppers Drug Mart when I got to Brighouse so I could get the aforementioned chips and dip. Got home at 9:10 on a 401, no thanks to MORE complicated sidewalk closures! They did make a temporary crosswalk near the intersection at my place, though.

The Canucks played the Flames at 7 tonight, and won 4-3 in a shootout!

EDIT: Kate left a post on my Facebook wall asking if I wanted to three-way call with Pothead Mike; OF COURSE I DID! I sent her my number and we were on a roll after that. Mike said it was good to hear my voice, and we talked about Scary Mysteries / Damarys (Mike's impressed with how I'm dealing with it) / the weather where we were / kids swearing / Ed Kemper / Ed Gein / Jackie / 99fruitbat / uploads / the Surrey transit cop shooting / the RCMP tank / how Kate and I did not say "ABOOT." That was pretty good!

Barry picked me up at 11:30 for my follow-up appointment at the eye clinic today. Everything looks good according to Dr. Wise, who gave me two more bottles of eyedrops, which I got the pharmacy next door to open! I also have a one-week followup appointment on the 17th at 1:30 PM, which is definitely a convenient time for me to bus. No more eye shield except for at night or when I sleep! Then Rachel called me at 5 today for about ten minutes; she says I sound good and I managed very well. I HOPE SO, hahaha! I will get to Dylan and Deb's place safely tonight after the kids' Mandarin class and dinner - phew!

Post-surgery selfie from last night... I swear I forgot what I did when I emailed the Cuya NESS perler to myself on New Year's Eve or transferring files from the phone to the computer, so thank goodness for the eye clinic's Wi-Fi, haha!

2018 Year In Review!

THIS ENTRY IS ALLOWED TO HAVE NON-ALIGNED TAGS.

[Meme fun: Take the first line from the first post of every month of the year. Repost it here as your year in review. (I'm discounting greetings and things like that :P) Yeah, it's been an interesting year!]

Go to your Calendar and find the first entry for each month of the year. Post the first line of it in your journal as a paragraph, and that's your "Year In Review."

I got a baby girl card for Jason and Vanessa ("KEEP CALM AND CARRY BABY WIPES"), NEW Shasha organic ginger snaps for Vanessa (no sugar?!), 200g of on-sale Ferrero Rocher, 100 store brand bandages, a NEW Carnation variety pack of hot chocolate (TURTLES Canada / Coffee Crisp / After Eight), and NEW Lipton Chicken Noodle Supreme soup from London Drugs, which has just started charging for plastic bags. SO MUCH ON-SALE BLACK PEPPER SALMON JERKY FOR ME AND JIMMY AND JULIE, OH MY! I called Barry at 8:35 AM to tell him about the mouse on the glue trap which I discovered last night. The computer restarted at 6 AM! I called Barry at 9:40 this morning to remind him about going to Rona for a Victor Pest Chaser Ultrasonic Rodent Repeller, which cost $33. I went to the pharmacy next door at 1:50 to refill my prescription early; yes, even Adam commented on it!

I left at 5:55 to get two 3-subject Hilroy notebooks in green and light blue (for home use and road use) from London Drugs, returning home at 6:40 on a late 407. CHOCOLATE AND BATHROOM REPLACEMENTS GALORE AGAIN, and today's date is a palindrome: 8/1/18! Yesterday, Frances C. emailed me to say that she couldn't make it to Felico's because of work, which is fine. I went out at 12 on a 401 so I could buy Campbell's Chunky Soup (Jerk Chicken with Vegetables / Butter Chicken with Vegetables), NESCAFÉ instant coffee (December 16, 2017), a NEW on-sale limited edition Oh Henry! Canada / Oh Henry 4:25 Pop-Up candy bar, barkTHINS snacking dark chocolate with pumpkin seeds for Thanksgiving dinner, NEW limited edition Doritos Late Night Fully-Loaded Nacho chips, and HALLS assorted mint cough drops. I went out at 12:20 on a 414 to do some shopping for on-sale Halloween candy and Advent calendars. COFFEE TIME while I'm still figuring out why Jimmy blocked me instead of just talking to me about what I did...... I should have posed it as a hypothetical a while ago!

I went to the pharmacy next door at 1:30 to refill my prescription, showered, and did laundry today. Then I went to H and M to see if I could get sweatpants. No luck at all, even when I dragged an associate across the store! At least now I have the phone number and (mow that I'm home) the proper tag numbers for my preferred style of sweatpants! 604-279-1811 AND 063 658 68! When I got home and organized stuff, I called the store - they don't have that one because it's popular / best-selling, but will have a shipment in very soon, and said I should call in the late afternoon or early evening. Okay, then!

I got on-sale Arm and Hammer 50-load laundry detergent and store brand garbage bags at Shoppers, and on-sale bulk pads x2 (saving $1 per package) at London Drugs (just missing the 407) before hauling the heavy stuff home at 2:50 on a 401, having to get off one stop earlier because of the road closures and construction! Gotta remind white Eric about that soon... I also found a random Bench / Body men's underwear in her dried laundry. o_O

I got this error message on Discord this morning. 50 new messages since 4 PM on DECEMBER 31, 1969?! Apparently, it's a common default date for programming. (not for dates, but date-time integers) AKA 0 would be Dec. 31, 1969 at X PM... 10000 would be like Jan. 1 at Y PM. January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC was the beginning of time... for computers that use C-based time systems that is. ... which also happens to be 1969 December 31 4:00:00 PM PST. I got to voice call Helen Y. yesterday via Facebook Messenger - SO GOOD TO HEAR THE OTHER'S VOICE! Diane also re-friended me... okay, then! I also finally deleted all the Video Game Enemies albums on Facebook! They were fun at the time, but trying to redo them because various pages have gone bye-bye is just too exhausting... 39 albums and 4738 pics! The Canucks played Colorado at 7 tonight, and the crazy game went to overtime! VANCOUVER WON 7-6! FIVE POINTS FOR PETTERSEN!

Today is Humility Day! I emailed Kevin to wish him a happy birthday, and he replied to thank me. Good thing that Hotmail didn't screen my email this time, and of course I'll remind him about my Felico's birthday dinner closer to the date! Then I got another email saying that Christon is now engaged to Alice - okay then, people!

After Barry dropped me off at Oakridge at 10:35 AM, I bought NEW Taki's Fuego Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Xplosion Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Angry Burger Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Crunchy Fajitas Mexican snacks / NEW Peace Tea Peach Party iced tea / NEW Mini Rolos as a treat after my eye exam / NEW Take Home Size Maltesers at the Oakridge Safeway. I also had a NEW Korean Pulled Pork six-inch sandwich at the Subway in the food court since I was right there anyway and needed to eat. Then I returned the chocolate - TOO HOT AND IT WOULD MELT IN FIVE MINUTES!

Later at Oakridge Station, some guy practically threatened to sue me over incidental contact with my bulky reusable bag. This city, I swear. Just because you wanted to get by after maneuvering your bike into the elevator does NOT mean you get ALL THE SPACE EVER! I wasn't even in his way! That wasn't even the first person who had a problem with my reusable bag, as there was some lady on a crowded Canada Line train who said "You're excused" after I entered the train at 49th and got a seat.

When I got to Jon and Harmony's at 2:10, the door was open since it was still pretty hot, so I just got to invade the living space. The kids greeted me with "YOU BREAK IT - YOU FIX IT!" but calmed down and told me that they'd gone to Granville Island today. We heard about a Canada Line emergency - thank goodness that it didn't affect me, only Olympic Village to King Edward! (it did affect Jon coming home from teaching) The skating lesson went fine - I told Harmony that no, I didn't have to pay anything for the eye ultrasound or cataract surgery!

Hiero told me that he didn't like it when I farted - he just likes his own farts. Okay, then! We had pizza, more laksa, blueberries, and corn on the cob for dinner after I read some more Robert Munsch stories. I got to hold a content baby Beckett for a while (and show him a few books) when Jon was finishing up with his piano student Curtis, but the baby started crying almost as soon as Curtis left! (before, I told Curtis to "quick - play some music!" when Beckett started fussing at the start of the lesson) I went through the Translink route map with the kids when Harmony grew tired of it, and left at 7:30, just managing to get a 49 before getting home at 8:10 on a 401. I was NOT waiting 20 minutes in the muggy heat!

After COFFEE TIME, Barry picked me up at 8:30 AM for my 9:15 AM cataract consultation on Burrard with Dr. Wise. The eye exam was okay, but now I have to go in for an eye ultrasound on September 21! Thank goodness that and September payday are BEFORE Barry goes on holiday. I got him to drop me off at Oakridge Mall, so YAY FOR THAT!

At 9 AM, I called the nearby medical clinic to see when their walk-in hours are; they'd changed them in the months since I'd been there last. Now they're on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 1:30, and are by appointment only; I can live with that for now, so I made one for tomorrow. (I could have had this hearing issue fixed on FRIDAY?!) I went out at 9:45 and promptly just missed a 401 - UGH! Thank goodness that White Spot was still serving breakfast when I finally got there at about 10:15 or so on a 407. I had a Cheesesteak Hash Eggs Benedict, combining National Eggs Benedict Day AND Day of the Mushroom! Then I got unexpectedly on-sale [judging by the receipt] Softsoap body wash x3 (Coconut Oil and Lavender / Honey Creme and Lavender / Blooming Jasmine and Plum) and Excel Polar Ice gum x3 (my old gum got soft and yucky within 1.5 months instead of two-ish...) at Shoppers Drug Mart before walking to London Drugs to get Crunchy Mint / Crunchy Raspberry / Crunchy Espresso M and Ms for Harmony on Thursday. I got home at 11:35 on a 407, then showered and did laundry.

After specifying a more narrow time range through email this morning (and after my COFFEE TIME AND NOODLE TIME), Eric came over at 12:55 to check out my computer and microphone, saying that the hallway smelled like Chinese takeout. He tested the sound and tried looking things up to fix my Discord scrolling issue. The scrolling worked on Firefox, but it also blinked every few seconds. Not ideal, but at least I confirmed that Twitch streams will work on Firefox. (it happened to be HS's DRAGON WARRIOR randomizer) Apparently, my mic was from 1996 or so... wow. After going to a bunch of different websites - Amazon, Reddit, London Drugs, Memory Express, Best Buy, etc. - I asked (instead of assuming) whether he had time to go to Best Buy today and then come back and test whatever new microphone I ended up getting.

He did, so we were in and out of Best Buy at Lansdowne in five minutes. Pretty good for the weekend! We also saw a DOLAR SHOP hot pot place - interesting! Eric said that the parking pass was an annoying procedure, which is true. He also blew out my system with a can of compressed air. We came back and tested the brand new INSIGNIA computer microphone, and enabled Voice Activity on Discord, which fixed my microphone issues there. (I tested it with Luna to see if she could hear me) While he was leaving at 3:35, it smelled like oranges, but that was because he was eating one. I also asked him to let me know if he asked Kieran about an operating system upgrade, which he seemed fine with as well. Of course I thanked him for everything! I also noticed that William unfriended me... okay then, former Awana kid!

After COFFEE TIME, Eric picked me up at 6:25 (he had to work from home today) so we could go to Jeremy's. I had his Ganong Delecto dark peppermint creams and Christmas card, plus Jeremy's FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Advent calendar and Christmas card. I'd also decided to give Ayler my old NIV Reference Bible (from 2010) for later in life. HA! Eric and I talked about life on the way there ("Christmas spirit?" "Well, I can't bitch about it being too early to mention Christmas..."), Wo's Restaurant, his not seeing Jon's new place apart from moving help, that Kwong Chow dinner, and his asking if I liked hot or cold yoga. Hahaha, no! I do know there are places near Jeremy's that offer it, though. We passed by the Boiling Point Hot Soup Restaurant which I'd seen on Yelp a couple years ago, too. The Canucks played Toronto at 4 today, and won 2-1, which I heard about later. When we got to Jeremy's apartment, I could hear what seemed like Randal pontificating on something, so I commented on this to Eric in a low voice. After hearing a little more of this "pontificating," I understood that it was the pre-dinner prayer. Oh well!

I saw Ayler and Hiero for two minutes as they were getting ready to leave with Harmony, and Ayler greeted me with "You should be here earlier!" Hahaha! I told him that Eric had had to work from home today, so that hadn't been possible. Then Jon said that I could have been there earlier had I not been too lazy to take the bus. Whatever - Eric had enabled it by being home when I called his cell at 2:30 to see what was going on after he hadn't answered my email reply last night! I asked Ayler if that meant he wanted to see me more, and he said yes. I think that's a good sign, so I said I'd see him on Monday. "And then Wednesday!" he said. No, that isn't going to happen! I managed to offload the Bible to Harmony since she had the cleanest hands out of her and the kids before they left. Later, Jon said that if I didn't hear from him, I should come on Monday - his student had been sick last week, so he'll call to see if the lesson is still going on. I also said that I'd sent Steph his address, so she'll send him that baby card with Henry (but I said "some mail") when she gets around to it. I gave Jeremy his FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Advent calendar, which he apparently really loved because he used to watch that exact FROSTY THE SNOWMAN cartoon religiously as a child! Hahaha, I'm glad that he really loved it! Of course he thanked me! He was also surprised at the pile of mostly change that I dumped on the donations table, deciding to raise my payment by two loonies and a toonie. (Jon's smoker friend Edwin left at this point, too)

I talked to Dilys and Trish about using Ayler and Hiero's leftover mugs (kid cooties can't get us!), wedding card / wedding thanks etiquette, early Christmas decorating / Christmas songs, Jesse's brother Hubert holding hands with a girl named Amanda at their first group meetup at a movie (that worked for them), Steph / Lisa / Fraser / Henry (Dilys had seen Steph and Lisa with my parents at a White Spot on Kingsway [?] while she was pregnant with Fraser), cookbooks, reading books, non-fiction, swearing around kids, hillbilly society, and documentaries after saying hi to a guy named Jonathan / Caleb / Jesse / Christon / Gino / Quan / Rebecca. Then I finally got a chance to ask Kevin whether he'd received the MEGA SUSHI email two months ago (couldn't do it at the Wo's Restaurant dinner), but he said that it must not have come through his inbox, then apologized. Nothing to be done about that!

Later, the phone was off the hook, so some people showed up randomly. I told Dilys that at the last dinner, I had accidentally locked Jon out of the apartment when he came back from taking the kids home with Harmony; I'd locked Jeremy's apartment door out of habit! I shouted over the music to ask Randal about NaNoWriMo, but he hadn't done it. He did say that there was a local challenge to write a novel in three days - yeah, I could never do that! Also, he mentioned that it was too loud with the music and other conversations. Not as bad as the Shark Club, man! I said hi to Ivan, who said I looked the same with my festive "jeweled" shirt and Santa hat - OF COURSE! Dilys asked if the clock chimed - yes, it did! Someone asked whether Jeremy had a VHS collection, but nope! He did have vinyl records, for sure! Christon told us about the Willingdon café $5 meal ministry before he left early.

Later, Jeremy was showing Trish some Christmas ornaments and decorations (including candy canes, which my nephews had recognized) on the Christmas tree. Lots of yearly ornaments and inheritances from his grandma! There was a bird feeder decoration from his grandma, and Eric wanted to ask Jeremy whether there was a leftover Communion glass there. Nobody heard him, so I used my existing NG lungpower to relay the question. Jeremy gave us a look, looked at the decoration again, and laughed - there was indeed a Communion cup! I had to laugh and said that Eric had NAILED IT! Ivan, Randal, Eric, and I talked about "accident" kids like Hiero and Ivan's brother Nathan, kids ten months apart, Richmond life, renting, his paying cheap rent to his parents, night shifts / managerial positions not being worth it for sleep / money considerations, the high gasoline prices (147.9?), Ivan's having to make FOUR trips to and from Richmond / Steveston to the Italian Cultural Centre because Stanley's wedding cake fell through (but they then got 500 different doughnuts from Steveston - PLAN BETTER FOR LESS DRIVING!), a pharmacist job, the new Shoppers Drug Mart near my place, the Richmond Centre Shoppers Drug Mart, patients wanting to set him up with their kids, my mom wanting to set me up with John Law once, how Mom acts when she's drunk (like the mooncake at Thanksgiving lunch 2007 at the townhouse - Kevin said that I had a good memory if Randal couldn't remember what happened WHEN HE HAD BEEN THERE!), Dad and others getting old, and the declining attendance at VCEFC.

I remembered to ask about the small group situation (Crossroads), but everyone in existing positions is overstressed and overstretched because there are fewer people around since they've left for various reasons. Awana is still a thing, but the leader-to-kid ratio is something like one leader to eight kids, as opposed to one leader for three or four kids like when I was doing it with Anita and Melia. The Fellowship situation may be starting up again with another version of David Fellowship, but lots of people have pre-existing small group commitments once or twice a month already, so the connection aspect may not be there if people only go to the big group once a month or so. Eric and I left at around 10:10, after I'd asked Ivan whether the church website had a livestreaming service, but he and Eric just chuckled - nope, probably not, although I do remember that they record the services and put them up at some point during the week.

When we left after I had drunken trouble with my winter jacket (Jeremy laughed - but I did thank him for hosting and all of that), Eric wondered if I'd had an enjoyable evening - I had, and so had he. He reminded himself not to go into robot mode, and I reminded him again when we got near that important turn-off. In the parking lot at 10:30, I asked what it meant if the computer restarted randomly or Windows didn't start up properly some of the time. I'm sure it could be a number of things, but I didn't want to set up something right then. He isn't even going to church tomorrow because he has a lot of work to do! I'll just email him later sometime, but it is time for bed now! Yep, Jimmy seems odd in the "wait a minute - why are you not saying anything?" way, but it's best to leave that alone.

Everything is all right." "No, I must die in peace," he said. "I had sex with your sister, your best friend, and a co-worker." "I know," I whispered. "That's why I poisoned you... now, close your eyes."

After taking a nap today, I noticed that Tryanna from Pathways had called me again a couple of times, and I was able to get through to her after a couple of attempts on my end. She wanted to change tomorrow's appointment to Monday because of possible staffing issues: sure, why not? I can be flexible when ASKED about it and given a chance to decide what I want for myself! Then I realized that this would NOT give Vanessa a chance to take photos of any GOOD TASTE dumplings or JOY dumplings in a bag, so I had to go out at 4:20 on a 401 to Price Smart with my wheeled luggage bag after doing my banking anyway!

I bought Philly-Style Steak and Cheese Bistro Crustini (thanks to Jimmy C. bringing up Philly Cheesesteak foods in Facebook chat), GOOD TASTE dumplings x5 (Beef and Vegetable / Cabbage and Chicken / Cabbage and Pork / Pork and Chive / Pork and Celery), JOY dumplings x4 (Pork and Tri-Treasure / Lamb and Onion / Pork and Vegetable / Pork and Chive), on-sale Western Family Peanut Butter Cups and Chocolate ice cream, Country Beef Pot Roast Stouffers Sauté Sensations, Homestyle Roast Chicken Stouffers Sauté Sensations, and some Chicken Alfredo Stouffers Sauté Sensations because of some Facebook comment mentioning Alfredo earlier. All of that weighed about 11.3 kg, and cost about $93.35! When I got home at 5:20 on a 407 (just managing to get the bus), I changed my RSVP to say that I'd be bringing that peanut butter chocolate ice cream instead for a dessert item! Erik's also just reminded me that Thanksgiving is coming up, so I put a turkey item on my grocery list for Monday.

"You Are the Judicial Branch"

You have a well-developed sense of right and wrong, but you are always open to changing your mind about the details.
You have a very rational mind. You never judge until you learn all of the facts and context for something.

You are good at seeing issues in full. You can hold a lot of details in your head at once, and you're able to organize chaos.
You aren't an overly emotional person, and you can see when people are arguing from emotion. You can step back and assess without passion.
