Paulo has finally decided on a venue for his belated birthday celebration with the REAL Superfriends on Saturday: Brassneck Brewery at 2148 Main Street, a few blocks down from the nail place. At least it's reasonably transit-accessible! He said last night when I texted him, "it's a while - oh shit, hang on, hahaha," but I don't really do spontaneity a lot, and I know Steve probably doesn't!

This afternoon, I got my first "is this apartment Sport Chek?" phone call in a while. The lady's first clue should have been when I answered, "The fuck?" to her question about shoes that I couldn't understand. Hahaha! Phone is now safely OFF! My phone number is one digit off from the store's number...

The NBA has also just suspended its season due to a player testing positive for the coronavirus, as per TSN...

2019 Yearly Recap!


This is the 2019 recap. Fitting for the last day of the year, no?


JANUARY

* Hung out with Vanessa and baby Cassidy pre-surgery at Lansdowne: Fresh Elements bubble tea, good dumplings at the food court, GOLDEN DRAGON SUSHI, and more! She helped me open the ridiculous eyedrops bottles, too! [Jan. 7]

* Had eye cataract surgery at Mount St. Joseph's - yikes! Luckily, I had love and support from my friends, and my parents DID drive me home! [Jan. 10]

* Had a one-day followup appointment at the eye clinic. Thank goodness that Barry was able to drive me! Things looked healthy! [Jan. 11]

* Crashed at Deb and Dylan's for about a week. Declan and Elysse liked me from the start, and it was pretty interesting and funny. ("I have my dad's old phone, Elysse." "Did he die?!" Haha!) Lots of meals and Swiss Chalet plus lamb and ribs and packed lunches! I appreciated their support, for sure! [Jan. 11-16]

* Had my one-week followup appointment at the eye clinic. My eye still looked healthy and there is no need to rush on any new glasses! I got hit up for cash at Vancouver City Centre, but I said NO. He should have fucked off instead! [Jan. 17]

* Had Hiero's birthday party: glow-in-the-dark bowling at Grandview Lanes! Dylan and Deb kindly gave me a ride back, and Mom did NOT have to insert herself into our post-church plans by thanking them for "looking after" me! [Jan. 20]


FEBRUARY

* Got a chance to three-way call with Kate and Pothead Mike right after the hockey game, which the Canucks won 4-3 in a shootout against the Flames! It was pretty good to hear their voices as we chatted about a bunch of things including Ed Kemper and the RCMP tank in Surrey. [Feb. 9]

After COFFEE TIME and calling the Lost Property Office too early for them to receive lost Translink items at 1 (UGH!), I went out at 11:10 on a 401 to go to the Gloucester Café to meet Auntie Catherine for my last belated birthday meal, taking the 15 Olympic Village bus down at Bay 2 across the street rather than walk the seven blocks in the iffy weather. So I was ten minutes late - it still was reasonably on time for me! I scanned the restaurant and finally saw her sitting at a table - she hugged me hello, and we eventually ordered two dishes to share with our individual hot milk tea. Seafood spaghetti in a creamy dill sauce AND chicken pineapple satay fried rice with plenty of shrimp and egg! No, I didn't want to take the leftovers with me!

She talked about church and noticed that I didn't need my glasses, so she was surprised - she didn't know about my eye surgeries! We talked about Mattias and Marcus - they're 11 and 9 now?! Chung Yan still watches Canucks hockey, so YAY for that! Auntie Catherine gave me a surprise 100% red silk scarf (probably an Indian scarf), so that was totally good! It was pretty rainy when we left at 1:20 (Harmony texted to say I could come at 3:30 or so), but I assured her that I'd be fine without an umbrella, and definitely didn't want to go to the North Shore or some other Vancouver Public Library! I just killed time at Oakridge with the free wifi, found out that I'd been BANNED from TwoX Chromosomes because of the too-inclusive special snowflakes ("not all women have vaginas" is very weird), and left at 3 on a 41st Avenue bus (then a 3) to get to the house at 3:35.

Beckett was surprisingly awake and definitely wanted to play with me, the baby pop-up toy (he's now strong enough to make it pop up himself once or twice), and the various balloons scattered around the room. He also threw the plastic blocks at me, but I didn't hold it against him. Hiero laughed when he saw that, so I said with a very serious face that it was NOT FUNNY, and let Harmony take care of the rest. Ayler had to read the Monkeys book with me, and Hiero wanted me to read a book that was at least different than the ones I'd read on Sunday. Beckett wanted to see what we were doing / be close to me, but his brothers didn't like that. I had to give him a few hugs because he was upset! I let Ayler use my cell phone calculator after he said that I was still better at math than he is (debatable) and Beckett said, "Na na na NAAAAAAAAA!", which is what he says when he REALLY wants something! (like the Rice Krispies, a couple of which I put in his mouth at snacktime, which he didn't seem to mind)

Speaking of being serious, Beckett had an extremely serious expression on his face when he was signing "MORE" at dinner. He did get more food, but started throwing it around, even decorating my red bling sweater with macaroni and cheese. (we also had squash, turkey, stuffing, and other Thanksgiving leftovers) Ayler asked me why drinking prune juice meant that you had to be on the toilet all afternoon (because I told him that), so I told him that there was a lot of fiber in prunes. He seemed to accept that. After Beckett cried and was let go from the table to crawl around, he knocked over Ayler's silver water cup, causing Ayler to get all wet and then cry and melt down himself.

Beckett threw the balloons around and said what sounded like "cup" - at least, he had the hard C sound down! Ayler wanted to regale me with piano technique, so I let him tell me about it while listening very seriously. I enjoy it when he tells me about his interests! Hiero wanted me to read to him, but I said that I had to watch Beckett to make sure he didn't kill himself. We also discussed global warming in a kid-appropriate way. I left at 7:20 and finally got home at 8:40. The Canucks played Detroit tonight at 7, and won 5-1.

It's National Punctuation Day today... MY FAVORITE! After COFFEE TIME, I had to leave at 2 on a 401 and then a 410 (which I just got to on time, no thanks to idiots blocking my path on the sidewalk) for my appointment with Dr. Ruby before I helped with the kids. That was uncomfortable - I also saw a professional Audrey. Also, I had to buy more NEW Beehive Burst Peppermint lip balm at the Dollar Tree since there was no photo online that I could find, so I had to take my own photo. (I had ripped mine open last week before I figured this out...) I was there on time, but STILL had to wait 20 minutes to be seen! UGH! I should have gone to Dollar Tree before rather than after! Then I tried to speedwalk over to Lansdowne station a block and a half away, and just missed a Waterfront train thanks to these two slow ladies on the elevator going down.

When I got to Marine Drive station, I definitely needed a snack, so I went to Tim Horton's. Luckily, there was no lineup, so I got a non-sticky cheese tea biscuit and then got out of there to find that a wheelchair wanted to get on the 3 as well. Then a stroller wanted to get on - at least this one contained a fairly curious kid who growled and made various noises, unlike the other stroller who got on after that one left! After another delay caused by the driver stopping in the middle of the road for five minutes to check an alarm that was going off, I finally got to Mount Pleasant at about 4:20 when I could have been there at 4:05! Too many delays! Yeah, I used Term to complain to via text, haha.

Inside, Penny was just finishing up speech therapy while Beckett was failing at napping again. Almost right after Penny left, it was off to the park across the street because Harmony wanted to walk Beckett around the playground to see if he'd nap then. Spoiler alert: He did not. Ayler asked if I wanted to play tag or Manhunt - no, because I had run out of energy and was like a car which had run out of gas. Hiero asked why I walked how I did, so maybe Jon and Harmony should talk to him about it at some point. Once we got home again after more promises of consequences, I got to play with Beckett for a bit. He liked the baby pop-up toy because it made him laugh more than usual, wanted me to shake my head a lot because it was funny, liked PEEK-A-BOO as per Hiero, tried eating my DRAGON HOODIE strings again, and climbed on me a few times. (he did pull Hiero's hair, though!)

At the same time, Hiero was trying to show me his origami. Blowing up squares to make huge boxes, oh my! Later, I stayed close as Beckett crawled on the couch despite Ayler telling me not to let him do it. Well, you're doing and completing a HUGE connect-the-dots puzzle, so I'll do what I want while keeping Beckett safe in my own way, including trying to put on one of his missing socks. We had salmon, congee, Chinese chicken soup, meatballs with ketchup and barbecue sauce, some veggies, and ridiculous amounts of shredded pork. Then we talked about whether Jon had been shot today at the Downtown Eastside (he was fine and didn't have to lie on the floor as per Hiero's question), why people shoot at each other ("because some people think that the best way to resolve their problems is with guns" and "that's why we don't joke about guns"), my Cactus Club birthday dinner, Ayler seeing Brooke early this morning ("how do you know?"), Hiero doing flips and gymnastics in the elevator earlier and being injured, and how much everyone in the family could eat compared to each other.

After I washed dishes for a bit, I read to Hiero about Optimus Prime and the Decepticons, then listened to Ayler play a boogie on the piano before listening to him read a Level 2 story about polar bears. Sure I had to help him with some words, but that's normal. I left at 7:20, but couldn't get a 3 bus till 7:40 thanks to a couple of buses being out of service! I missed a Brighouse train by five minutes, and JUST managed to get a 407 at Brighouse, no thanks to people blocking my path where I was going to run to the front door of the bus. Do I really have to shove my way past other people all the time to get where I'm going in a timely fashion?! I got home at 8:35, checked my mail, and found Julie's birthday card plus random stuff - yay!


Random stuff: Nathan returning the OUTLANDER novel to me, six packs of Compliments Safeway brand spicy chicken instant noodles, and yet another pair of reading glasses. Good thing I didn't buy the Jergens lotion today because of all the walking I had to do, AND the utter weight of the 650-page paperback book!

After COFFEE TIME, Eric M. picked me up at 7 so we could go to the Richmond Centre Cactus Club. Yay for both Erics, Randal, and Jeremy! I assume Chinese Eric was texting white Eric while we were trying to find parking at the mall, so I texted him saying just that, then he suddenly appeared when we had finally parked. We had to wait 45 minutes to be seated, so we just chilled in the mall coffee shop area while talking about Randal's sales guy taking them all out for lunch at that Cactus Club a couple of weeks ago, my giving Chinese Eric the last bag of Chitato Indomie Mi Goreng chips, Randal and Jeremy giving me birthday cards, the BC Lions (so boring), and Nathan not being able to make it. (HE isn't a flake!)

Once we were seated, I ordered a jambalaya rice bowl and iced tea. Randal had steak and frites with some beer, Chinese Eric had flatbread, white Eric had some blackened Creole chicken, and Jeremy had some butternut squash ravioli with prawns. Chinese Eric had a nosebleed halfway through dinner, but he wasn't sure what it was at first. I even took the napkin and moved it closer to the candle to see if it was sauce or something else. At least I wouldn't have to deal with that if it happened to Jimmy anymore! Chinese Eric tilted his head back and not forward, contrary to white Eric's Googling. (I had to go in as Cactus Guest)

We talked about our food, how bubble tea ISN'T some new fad, Jon, Harmony, Ayler, Hiero, Beckett, their not having a microwave (so they're the healthiest kids that Randal knows), Randal not taking piano lessons for the right reasons (and practicing was getting tedious), the automatic blinds ("why is it so dark suddenly?"), Justin Trudeau's blackface scandal, real-life Twitch streams, raiding Area 51, the Toronto Raptors memorabilia (white Eric had the right hoodie!), a future sports hangout, Jeremy not texting at all, Hiero's view on kindergarten, the fire outside, and just hanging out. They convinced me to order a dessert since it was my birthday dinner, so I did - white chocolate cheesecake! Then I found some Area 51 Naruto runners from a different angle on Reddit, and had to show Jeremy - he laughed! Randal commented that my phone's camera flash was really bright - well, the restaurant was really dark at that point! White Eric drove me home at 10:30, and it had really started raining then.

It's International Bacon Day today!


After COFFEE TIME, Eric picked me up at 12:05 for the wedding. Chinese Eric had texted him "hey" and nothing else, so Eric asked me to see what was up with that. Apparently, he'd asked him whether he'd picked me up yet. The wedding was very religious and traditional on Religion Road at Fujian Evangelical Free Church. I was glad to see Jeremy and Nate at least! Yes, things were relatively quick, but COME ON!

Later, I learned that Jon insisted that we all have lunch at Four Winds Pub in Delta - REALLY? (me, him, both Erics, Nathan, Jeremy, and Wesley) Why didn't you let someone know BEFORE I LEFT THE FUCKING HOUSE?! THAT'S the problem with spontaneity! I did NOT eat anything (the burritos were huge though!), and was very fucking annoyed with everyone - so just read and did not say much of anything. At least I got to talk to Nathan alone for a few minutes about his present feelings on weddings after all that had happened. He had had to do Citrus's wedding afterwards, but said that now it was okay, and thanked me for asking.

After that, SOMEONE also wanted to go for good coffee at Rocanini's in Steveston - can't you think of what I want for once?! We talked about everyone staring at their phone - I was trying to bang out a relatively quick message to Mike with the reliable wi-fi while we were there. THEN we decamped to white Eric's, where Veronica had kindly set up a table and chairs for us in the backyard before going to Van Dusen Gardens with Ron. At least I had water and ginger ale throughout the afternoon.

When we finally got to the restaurant, the parkade proved to be pretty confusing! I was at a table with everyone I knew, but we were stuck at the very back behind two pillars! We saw Deb, Dylan, Martin J. (who apparently also has an autistic kid), Martin T., Randal, Kevin, Isabel, Sheena, Lincoln, Karen, Vivian, and Geoffrey. We discussed the seating, "MORE TONGUE!" (we're known for shenanigans), Quiznos, Singapore, durian mochi NOT being durian MOCHA, hair follicle transplants done by ROBOTS, Samaritan's Purse, that lady who died because a metal straw pierced her brain, and the waiter taking the food platter away after he showed it to us BEFORE scooping it on our plates individually at the back. Some people had too much red / white wine, apparently including Alice's mom, which is how the MORE TONGUE thing came about.

After everything was done, I STILL had to wait around for the cleanup crew (who'd been given thank-you cards beforehand so they couldn't just "forget" about it), and then the loiterers! UGH! We did amuse ourselves at the photo booth, but STILL! Talked to Deb a bit about the summer, to Eric about PowerPoint (that's a VERY VALID excuse to leave...), and to Jon about Tom Lee Music / Hiero not getting any bullet train toys / my being there on Tuesday / speech therapy. Just as Eric and I were about to FINALLY drive away at 10:30, Chinese Eric delayed us by asking where Nathan was. HOW SHOULD WE KNOW?! I said GOODNIGHT rather firmly, and FINALLY got home at 10:40. Yes, I live THAT close to Kirin!

Just in time for a daily update! Before Paulo came over to pick up his stuff four minutes ago, I took a shower today. I gave Paulo his All-Bran Buds portion in a Rubbermaid microwaveable container (plus the packaging for that), one pack of Kwangchun Healthful roasted seaweed, some Mala Samyang noodles, regular Samyang Fire noodles, MyKuali spicy prawn Penang noodles, MyKuali spicy white curry Penang noodles, MyKuali Red Tom Yum Goong noodles, Sapporo Ichiban Tonkotsu ramen noodles, Vedan Bah Kut tea noodles, Vedan mushroom and artificial cuttlefish noodles, Vedan spicy Korean kimchi noodles, Vedan spicy mushroom noodles, Samyang Carbo Cheese noodles, Samyang Spicy Cheese noodles, and Paldo Korean Bul Jjamppong noodles - all in the LOQI reusable bag with cats on it that Jon and Harmony gave me for Christmas last year. I have tested it out; it's just not as roomy as the ones from London Drugs!

He was pretty excited, dancing around like a little kid! Yes, we both forgot about opening the Winter Creek oyster jar until he'd left, but I was luckily able to grab him before he had exited the building! He apologized for the lateness of the intrusion, but it's fine. LUCKILY, it was BEFORE midnight and I wasn't talking to Mike at the time. He also thought some MOTHER 3 music was some water boiling - if it sounds like THAT, then you got problems! It's the high notes of the jukebox!

I went to the eye clinic at 9:45 on a 401 (which I got just in time) for the six-week followup today at 10:45 after COFFEE TIME (20/30 vision is a good improvement even if I can't read fine print), then had lunch at Yaohan before seeing Rachel at the Caring Place for the last time. At Brighouse, I encountered a rude wheelchair old man idiot who assumed I was cutting him off at the fare gates - nope, I'm just faster than you, and other people also have places to go! He should also watch what he says and isn't the only person entitled to the fare gates. Any empathy I might have had for him having only one leg was just drained in that moment.

Dr. Wise recommended cheap reading glasses for now since my eyes still look healthy, and wants me to come back in six months on January 3. I went to Yaohan and killed the memory dragon of messaging people on the 6 Davie / 6 Downtown bus routes. Got beef internal noodles with wonton for lunch, and Lays lime chips / Lays cucumber chips in big bags for Rachel, Campbell's mushroom soup x2, a NEW on-sale Double-Ridged Lays chips package in Spicy Chicken and BBQ Pork (two each), MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong noodles, and NEW MyKuali spicy prawn noodles at Osaka Supermarket.

After the wrap-up session, I briefly went to Shoppers to buy on-sale Ben and Jerry's IF I HAD A MILLION FLAVORS and PEANUT BUTTER HALF-BAKED ice cream for Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day on July 1 coming up! No more frozen items until I eat some - the freezer can't fit anything else except air molecules! Got home at 4:25 on a 407, which is totally fine. Then I took a shower and discovered that Jon had made a reservation under his name at the Lion's Den for Randal's birthday on Sunday at 6. Nice!

Yesterday, Holly invited me to Steveston Pizza at her place tonight. Nobody was going to have the $850 pizza! ("SEENAY: Medley of tiger prawns, lobster ratatouille, smoked steelhead, Russian Osetra caviar, snowed with Italian white truffles $850") After I showered and had COFFEE TIME, Brian kindly picked me up at the hospital at 7:10 even though the pizza place was way closer to his apartment. We chatted about the expensive pizza (a MOUND of seafood on the order before his?!) and the NHL Draft Pick Lottery Day before getting to Holly's, where I unsuccessfully completed a call to her. She wanted to throw her keys down to us again, but actually answered the door instead once she realized Brian had five pizza boxes.

I said hey to Darryl and Paulo, informing Paulo that the temporary crosswalk was now closed off. He put his head in his hands and said, "I hate it..." Trust me, I understand ANY ranting he has to do on the issue! We all talked about life, Vegas, walking a lot on the LONG Strip blocks, online people, chatrooms, drunkenness, dodgy stuff, seeing family members, work schedules, Holly's new job starting tomorrow, dead people, being a travel agent, working with the general public, and upcoming plans. As usual, I have none. I did almost forget my jacket, oops. Darryl called me by name when we said bye to him outside, which shouldn't really be a surprise. Brian dropped me and Paulo off at about 9:40, which is pretty good. I actually have time to blog without being rushed off to do other things!

After COFFEE TIME, I had to get ready to leave by 11 for Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot at Lansdowne for a lunch with Mom and Dad. Fatty beef, lamb shoulder, Napa cabbage, white noodles, tofu, yams, vegetable and pork dumplings, deep-fried chicken wings, cod fillets, shrimp balls, beef balls, fish balls, tiger prawns, broth, an iced sour plum drink, and tea! Mom complained that they had seen bus stops around my place - yeah, but that doesn't mean they are in service right now! Dad "helped" with my phone's data and wifi settings. Yes, I know Harmony's family birthday is the 10th somewhere. I'll confirm things with Jon in a few days; no need to rush and be impatient about things! They dropped me off at London Drugs, so I walked home and got in at 12:45.

I got NEW Nissin prawn noodles x2 / NEW Nissin soya sauce and pork noodles x2 / on-sale Western Family beef noodles x2 / on-sale Western Family vegetable noodles x2, JOY dumplings x4 (Pork and Tri-Treasure, Lamb and Onion, Pork and Vegetable, Pork and Chive), Winter Creek raw oysters x2 for Raw Oyster Day (expires on Aug. 6), NEW on-sale Peace Tea iced tea x4 (Razzleberry raspberry / Lemon Love lemon tea / Caddy Shack tea and lemonade / Greenest of all Teas green tea) and on-sale Earth's Own unsweetened almond milk.

I think I'll take Barry's advice and go to Coast Capital sometime so I can figure out this shit. After that, I paid my Shaw bill online at home. That also gave me some stress because the bill was twice as high as it should have been, and I had to make a new Shaw ID and secure password at their website! Damn technology!

I showered and did laundry today. The Canucks played the Golden Knights at 7 tonight, and clawed back from a 4-1 deficit, but lost 5-4 in a shootout. Vegas even tapped their sticks and stayed on the ice to shake both the Sedins' hands.
