From Grammarly: How To Write Good, by Frank L. Visco!

Caveat emptor. Carpe diem. O si villi, si ergo, fortibus is in ero. Et tu, brute.

My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:

1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They're old hat.)
4. Employ the vernacular.
5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
8. Contractions aren't necessary.
9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
10. One should never generalize.
11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
12. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
13. Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14. Profanity sucks.
15. Be more or less specific.
16. Understatement is always best.
17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be avoided.
21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
22. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
23. Who needs rhetorical questions?

I called Barry at 8:50 to let him know about the dead mouse. When he called me back at 11 to say that he would be here in a couple of minutes, I checked the corner with the TV since I'd heard noise there as well last night. Yup, there was another dead mouse, this one in a glue trap. Good thing I checked, since Barry was here at 11:10 to remove them!

I called Dr. Wise's office at 11:15 because I'd run out of the Prolensa and Simbrinza eyedrops, and I'm starting to really feel a difference. I had to rest today because my eyes felt really weird like they did right after surgery. Luckily, I could pick them up this afternoon (being a Friday) before they closed at 4. I got there at 2:10 or so, and even got them to open ALL the ridiculously tiny eyedrops bottles x4 for me! PHEW!

On my way home, I just missed a Brighouse train from Yaletown-Roundhouse (where I FINALLY found the elevator to bypass the stairs), so I took a Waterfront train to stay on there so I could go to Broadway Station. I went to No Frills where I was confused by the self-checkout machine, which is nothing new. At least I got help! Bought three pounds of Parkay margarine (which I haven't bought since April 25, 2018?!) and President's Choice Kettle-Cooked Jalapeno chips. I stopped by the pharmacy next door after getting off a 401 at 3:40, and also refilled my birth control pills prescription. Everything is done - YAY!

Then Eric Ho FINALLY emailed me back to say that he's glad my eye surgery and recovery are going well, and we can get together around February 26 or a little later. Does he not know what an expiry date or deadline for the Boston Pizza Online offer is?! I want my free Bandera Pizza Bread, dammit! I'll just splurge and order delivery tonight since I somehow have more extra money in my bank account... I don't trust him to not come over before the offer expires. I eventually settled on a medium BBQ chicken pizza (which I haven't had since September 2016), a medium Meateor pizza for 50% off (which I haven't had since the last time I had pizza in August 2018 for Chinese Eric's birthday), and my free Bandera Pizza Bread with dips and cheese. There goes $57!

I showered today (an index card fell into the toilet from the bathroom counter?!), then called Eric about a ride tomorrow to church because of Hiero's glow-in-the-dark bowling birthday party. (Deb had emailed to say that I know mornings are a challenge for them and she's teaching Sunday School tomorrow in any event) When he called me back, he said he had good news and bad news. Korey wasn't in town as I thought ("that would be horrible news for you"), but he had hockey afterwards. That's fine, as I'm only using church as a vehicle to more easily get to the birthday party somehow, which I told him. He'll show up tomorrow at about 9:10 AM. Phew!

I was out of my place at 5:20 when Deb called to see if it was a good time to pick me up on the way to grab the kids from wherever they were after school. Sure, why not? We went to Hugh Boyd where Declan was; Dylan had picked Elysse up earlier since he'd felt sick at work at 2 or so. Declan demonstrated some good reading skills when we waited for Deb at Seafair Complex before getting some gas for the car. Yeah, the sushi and tempura is a good place to start. He told me that he would let his wife choose the names for their future kids - solid choice, my friend! I'm sure he'd like to try Subway sometime, too. As soon as we got home, the kids started talking about negotiating iPad time and toy time - nice!

We had very slightly spicy chicken wings, rice, bass fish, and bok choy for dinner after watching SAMURAI RANGERS and MINECRAFT. Declan wanted to show me his musical SAMURAI RANGERS sword, which is fine. Elysse insisted on watching GLITTER FORCE with GLITTER FORCE MAKEOVER on the iPad during dinner. When she asked me about my cellphone, I said that I'd received it from my dad. Her answer: "DID HE DIE?!" HAHAHAHA, how amusingly morbid!

Thank goodness that one of the three sweatpants had the right style number (06365 868), so I was able to get that blue one, paying by cash. The clerks were very apologetic that it wasn't really put on hold and that I had to wait more for the frozen computer.

Then I went to Shoppers Drug Mart to get a Hungry Man turkey microwaveable meal, getting home at 12:50 on a 401. IF I DIDN'T HAVE TO WAIT AT THE STORE, I COULD HAVE TAKEN THE 407 AT 12:30, GETTING HOME EARLIER! Eric emailed me back to say that he could drive me to baby Beckett's dedication service on Sunday, but he has to be at church at 9:25 AM. That should be fine, I guess. After COFFEE TIME and seeing Rachel at the Caring Place at 2 on a 414, I took the 406 and 410 (just managed to get it!) to buy stuff. I got 28 birthday cards / HERSHEY'S Gold Peanuts and Pretzels 39g chocolate bar (which is already broken... Then I purchased Heat Holders thermal socks (SOCKS ON SOCK DAY! WHAT A QUIRKY COINCIDENCE!), Black Friday on-sale store brand garlic pills which expire in May 2020, and NEW White Chocolate Peppermint M and M candy from London Drugs after taking the 410 back there. Somehow, ALL THAT took 90 minutes, despite the dollar store and Big Crazy being NEXT DOOR to each other, and London Drugs being a short bus ride away! People with a billion things in front of me at the store, I swear... I got home at 5:25 on a 401 through the construction zone, and noted the security guard sitting in the smoky-smelling front hall. Jeremy emailed me to say that he could make it to Felico's - YAY! Barry called me at 8:35 AM to confirm the time that he'd be picking me up, and 10:15 sounded fine to me. Then Dr. Wise's office called me at 9:05 AM to say that they had "a situation" come up and they'd have to reschedule either today or Monday at the latest. Ugh, fine - make me drink coffee for no reason! :P

The office called me again at 9:45 AM (that was fast!) to reschedule, so I brought up my ride situation, but October 19 at 11 AM should tentatively work. I then called Barry to see if it would since he's going to Japan; since he didn't have his appointment book with him at that moment, he called me back at 10:05 to say that yes, it would. Then I called the doctor's office back to confirm things. Phew, now I can hopefully relax and take Neo-Citran when I feel less awake from the coffee!

Edit at 12: I told Jimmy about finding out that "the situation" was a carjacking downtown, and he tried making me laugh by saying "Car-jacking off." NOT FUNNY IN THIS CONTEXT, BABE! Totally inappropriate, like his Goodwill thrift store "gaylord" slang for a full forklift of donations!

After Barry dropped me off at Oakridge at 10:35 AM, I bought NEW Taki's Fuego Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Xplosion Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Angry Burger Mexican snacks / NEW Taki's Crunchy Fajitas Mexican snacks / NEW Peace Tea Peach Party iced tea / NEW Mini Rolos as a treat after my eye exam / NEW Take Home Size Maltesers at the Oakridge Safeway. I also had a NEW Korean Pulled Pork six-inch sandwich at the Subway in the food court since I was right there anyway and needed to eat. Then I returned the chocolate - TOO HOT AND IT WOULD MELT IN FIVE MINUTES!

Later at Oakridge Station, some guy practically threatened to sue me over incidental contact with my bulky reusable bag. This city, I swear. Just because you wanted to get by after maneuvering your bike into the elevator does NOT mean you get ALL THE SPACE EVER! I wasn't even in his way! That wasn't even the first person who had a problem with my reusable bag, as there was some lady on a crowded Canada Line train who said "You're excused" after I entered the train at 49th and got a seat.

When I got to Jon and Harmony's at 2:10, the door was open since it was still pretty hot, so I just got to invade the living space. The kids greeted me with "YOU BREAK IT - YOU FIX IT!" but calmed down and told me that they'd gone to Granville Island today. We heard about a Canada Line emergency - thank goodness that it didn't affect me, only Olympic Village to King Edward! (it did affect Jon coming home from teaching) The skating lesson went fine - I told Harmony that no, I didn't have to pay anything for the eye ultrasound or cataract surgery!

Hiero told me that he didn't like it when I farted - he just likes his own farts. Okay, then! We had pizza, more laksa, blueberries, and corn on the cob for dinner after I read some more Robert Munsch stories. I got to hold a content baby Beckett for a while (and show him a few books) when Jon was finishing up with his piano student Curtis, but the baby started crying almost as soon as Curtis left! (before, I told Curtis to "quick - play some music!" when Beckett started fussing at the start of the lesson) I went through the Translink route map with the kids when Harmony grew tired of it, and left at 7:30, just managing to get a 49 before getting home at 8:10 on a 401. I was NOT waiting 20 minutes in the muggy heat!

I got NEW Nissin prawn noodles x2 / NEW Nissin soya sauce and pork noodles x2 / on-sale Western Family beef noodles x2 / on-sale Western Family vegetable noodles x2, JOY dumplings x4 (Pork and Tri-Treasure, Lamb and Onion, Pork and Vegetable, Pork and Chive), Winter Creek raw oysters x2 for Raw Oyster Day (expires on Aug. 6), NEW on-sale Peace Tea iced tea x4 (Razzleberry raspberry / Lemon Love lemon tea / Caddy Shack tea and lemonade / Greenest of all Teas green tea) and on-sale Earth's Own unsweetened almond milk.

Also purchased on-sale Clorox wipes x2, on-sale Kraft Parmesan cheese, a Hungry Man turkey dinner, Arm and Hammer baking soda, Arm and Hammer toothpaste, on-sale Prego Fresh Mushrooms pasta sauce, World Authentica Cuisine pasta sauce, on-sale Western Family blueberry-pomegranate yogurt, on-sale Western Family frozen vegetables, Vedan mushroom and artificial cuttlefish instant noodles, Wei Lih spicy beef noodles, and Six Fortune broad noodles. Then my debit card got declined a couple of times because I couldn't swipe my chip card, and the magnetic stripe couldn't be read! I think I'll take Barry's advice and go to Coast Capital sometime so I can figure out this shit. After that, I paid my Shaw bill online at home. That also gave me some stress because the bill was twice as high as it should have been, and I had to make a new Shaw ID and secure password at their website! Damn technology!

After COFFEE TIME, I left extra early (ugh) at 12:20 for my 1 PM rescheduled appointment with Rachel. I guess I have to take being half an hour early rather than ten minutes late, due to weird C94 scheduling. After that, I went to London Drugs and got Excel peppermint gum, and was very careful with my selection for a new wallet, eventually deciding on a $30 (and expensive!) "big" black Swiss Gear toiletry bag. At least it can fit 100 index cards, three maxipads, and a bunch of other stuff while still being wide enough for a bank envelope should I need one to compartmentalize some cash money! Speaking of cash money, I got two $5 bills in my change, which should be enough for the "extra" $10 for Andrew's final computer payment for next payday! I found a huge (and somewhat damp) box right by my door. Whatever - at least I don't have to go to the "nearest" Canada Post outlet to pick it up... Oh hey, it's Christmas stuff from Julie! A Peanuts Christmas card, CHRISTMAS HOUSE erasers, Snugadoo Too Super Soft purple striped socks and a red toque, two CHRISTMAS HOUSE jingly necklaces, Hot Tamales Fierce cinnamon jellybeans (better not let the kids have any...), bite-size Tootsie Rolls in a bank, 12 CHRISTMAS HOUSE pencils, CHRISTMAS stickers, and a Christmas memo book with pen!

Pasta and more! )

From Reddit on October 31, 2017: NESTING PARTNER?! I know that LDRs are a thing, but just say that it's the person whom you live with! Also, SearedScallops seems to be involved in more than one relationship at a time. What?!

From Reddit on November 1, 2017: While I can say that ableism does exist because I am a disabled person myself, "creepy" is NOT an ableist term!

And another one because they can fit into the same screenshot when I collapse a bunch of comments...

From Reddit on November 1, 2017: Also, "heavy breathing" is NOT fatphobia! It's the implication that the person is sexually aroused, not that they can't go anywhere without having to catch their breath because they're morbidly obese! Wait - these comments both come from Listen_Up_Slapnuts! That explains something...

From Engrish: There's a store called Turd Baby?!

From Jazmin and Neatorama: The Toilet Kool Koozie! Are you looking for a polite way to tell someone that you do not approve of their choice of canned beverage? You need the Toilet Kool Koozie from the NeatoShop. This reusable and easy-to-clean drink holder makes it perfectly clear that you think their beverage tastes like toilet water or perhaps something that you would deposit into the toilet, Isn't being kind of nice fun?

From Not Always Right: Abraham Smutz?!

I went out at 4 on a 407 to the Bay, but all their garbage cans were very expensive. It was off across the street to London Drugs: a big reusable bag, a replacement Sterilite garbage can, on-sale Moritz Icy Squares, on-sale Lindt Peppermint Cookie chocolate truffles, and Waterbridge Connoisseur brandy beans! Got home at 4:55 on a 407, which is MUCH better than last night!

Lindt Peppermint Cookie chocolate truffles!

From Amanda: The Googly Gooeys! Attempts to Sleep! On certain nights, it's so easy to fall asleep. However, on most nights... "3267, 3268, 3269, 3270 sheep..." "What's that noise?!" "Darn it. I think I'm hungry." "... but I don't want to brush my teeth again." "Fine. I'll go grab some cookies." "It's so dark and scary out here." "I'll watch TV until I fall asleep!" "I'm still not sleepy. What's wrong with me?" "This is it! I'm gonna try to sleep." "Grrr... when will my brain ever shut up?!"

"He's Keeping You a Secret For Now"

Your guy doesn't seem super psyched to go public with your relationship - at least not totally public.
Maybe he's a private person, or maybe you are just starting to date. It's nothing to worry about yet.

Keep an eye on this guy. Is he as serious about you as you are about him? He may be hiding something... you!
You want to be with someone who's as excited to be with you as you are with him. Even if it means getting a new man.

"You Are a Brown Leaf"

You are a well-grounded and down-to-earth person. You are dependable, in part because you like knowing that you can depend on yourself.
You are quietly confident and know who you are. You don't have to be the most colorful person in the room to be comfortable.

You are approachable and friendly. People naturally trust you. You are as stable and honest as you seem.
You are warm and reassuring. You believe that there is a season for everything, and you accept each day as it comes.

"You Are Quite Wise"

You don't feel different than anyone else, but that's part of your wisdom. You are humble and thoughtful.
You always try to reflect more than react, but sometimes your very human nature gets the better of you.

You try to go with the flow and live in the moment. There is a lot of wisdom to be found in the present.
If there's anything you're trying to improve on, it's getting to know yourself a little better.

"You Are Gillian"

You are a rebel to the core, and if someone calls you on it, it only makes you act out.
You are fun-loving and impulsive. You seek a life of adventure and enjoy being with whoever is Mr. Right Now.

You don't care what others think. You are good to those who matter to you, and your attitude helps liberate them.
You take life as it comes, and you are happy to squeeze the most out of every day. Party at your place!

"You Make Friends Wisely"

Your friendships are gold to you, and something you take seriously. You prefer quality over quantity when it comes to friends.
When you make friends with someone, you hope to be friends for life. You are loyal to your friends, no matter what goes down.

You expect a lot from friendship, and you're not up for being friends with just anyone. You need to build a relationship first.
Your friends are like family to you... sometimes even closer than family. You can't imagine life without them!

"You Should Be Single"

Just to be clear, this doesn't mean you are bad at relationships. Just the opposite!
You are good at it all - friendship, dating, networking... And you have a blast mixing and mingling.

Maybe you're the married type, but these days, being single is seeming a lot more fun to you.
Whether you're technically married or not, your friends, hobbies, and freedoms mean the world to you.

"You Are Insecure About Your Looks"

You don't necessarily think that you're ugly, but you do consider yourself to be average.
And in this looks-driven world, you just don't think average cuts it anymore. You want to stand out.

You may not feel secure about how you look, but you probably look better than you think.
Ask someone you trust what your best feature is. You may be surprised to find out!
